Goran Bregovic, "The Master"...
|
|
|
|
Many of us know Goran Bregovic,
but there are many others that do not. In Chile, even people that do not know him have surely
listened either commercial or domestic programs at least, inspired passages or original themes composed by Goran for the films
of Emir Kusturica. That’s for sure! And of course his presentation in the “Santiago Festival a Mil” in January
2008, has made him popular among a public that did not have any idea of his existence, or very little knowledge in any case,
in spite of the many followers he has here.

Goran Bregovic is a personage
with an undeniable magnetism for what he represents. He had to take care of his little brother being very young. He was not
different from any other boy in the place where he lived; Goran liked music and played the guitar. He worked playing the guitar
in “kafanas" (bars) in the city of Sarajevo making a way of living with his pop music, but by heart he loved rockn’
roll and heavy-metal music. In the Sixties he improved his music and traveled to Italy to work in restaurants. Some time
later, Goran returns to Sarajevo and forms the “Bjelo
Dugme” group. This part of his story is full of different versions, thus introducing a myth. The truth is that the “Bjelo
Dugme” (White Button) members became the maximum rock exponents in the Seventies and Eighties, not only in Yugoslavia but in the "neighboring" countries like Greece,
Turkey and Bulgaria,
among others. They became very popular, wealthy and were always in the eye of the hurricane due to controversy and gossiping
for diverse reasons. They split at the end of the 80’s. Later on, Goran devoted himself to create music for films and
participated together with Emir Kusturica in the creation of the sound tracks of the films of the latter. He has participated
in different projects, like music for cinema and collaborations with different artists of several musical branches, as for
example the Irish music, Ofra Haza, Cesarea Evora… Nowadays he has its own orchestra where he has chosen his musicians
from different places of Serbia, Rumania
and Bulgaria, many of them amateurs removed from familiar orchestras, and
who we met in Chile, "Orchestra for Weddings
and Funerals". His last work has been "Karmen With a Happy Ending," a gypsy version of the opera Carmen where, according to
Goran, the best gypsy ending is that where everybody gets married, and that’s what happens. Of this work, he says: "It’s
a short play, with a very little stage scene thus it can be presented anywhere". In addition, he has been responding to the
"way of making theater forgotten a century ago: where musicians travel and act representing an opera". He dedicates it to
the gypsies simply because they deserve it. By the way, in this disc there are songs sung by Alen, apparently he did not appear
in previous discs, though actually Alen sings those themes during his concerts.
As Bubamara of Chile (that’s
me as the creator of this site) I can say that Goran Bregovic is one of those musicians whose best work is to join any influence
in a very coherent way and to be picky in choosing the people that are to collaborate with him or in his projects, therefore
it’s not strange that Alen Ademovic was also chosen. Goran knows a lot, he is like an astute fox but exquisite guy who
knows clearly where he aims. Knowing a little of his work tells us of a peculiar and powerful musician, who is able to use
electronic elements or directly extract it from pop and rock'n roll, combined with Balkan folklore, Mediterranean music and
even the cinematographic scores. In this way, his music enjoys a very interesting
"mix"; therefore he is one of the greatest and most popular exponents of the World Music, even long before the term "World
Music" was conceived as a fashionable concept, as regards to music… He has known how to popularize and commercialize
with much success in the "West" this wonderful mixture of gypsy music with influences of klezmer, Balkan folklore, rock and
much more… I see him as a tremendous little genius who reminds me of Frank Zappa by his multiple possibilities and his
hard face (irreverent, dared and direct). Loved and hated, he has not been exempt from controversies that go from his political
visions in the old disturbing Yugoslavia
of one time, until today where terrible extremist positions exist like nationalism, and even unclear histories of plagiarizing
other musicians. His poli-ethnic family has surely contributed to his eagerness to integrate various styles, thus giving him
a special value when trying to send messages indicating that we grow up when we are able to value and respect anything that
is different from our thoughts. Nowadays his capacity of convoking is not only reflected in the Balkan zone but he has managed
to be in different other places like Thailand, Taiwan,
Norway, Lebanon, Korea or Brazil.
This is due because musical language is understood by everybody and even more if it comes from the hand of Goran. "Brega",
as he is named affectionately, is an enthusiastic man, an excellent and open artist who allows us to vibrate with his music.
Thank you, Master!!!
